  1. Its not 2 weeks - more like 2 days!!

Its called 'decompression' (and yes they have to go)- the guys will get a full medical - both physical and mental.

They also get to drink and let off steam before returning back home to normal duties.

  2. Haha, be lucky to get a weekend in Bognor pmsl

  3. Yes it is true but it's not for 2 weeks (unless it has changed) When my OH came home from Iraq he had 24 hours in Cyprus, i was a bit pis*sed that he wasn't coming straight home as i was desperate to see him but i also at the same time understood why they do it. What other posts have said it's call 'decompression' and the boys and girls can more or less run wild, let of steam and get it out of their system (not that 24 hours can undo 7 months worth of damage like but hey ho)

My OH said when they got there they went to the beach and had a 'frolick' as he liked to call it haha, and they had a BBQ too, lots of beers, the Padre was there for any one wanting to talk to him and they also got debriefed ie: what's it going to be like trying to return to "normal life" and telling them that their wives will have missed them but they had to understand that we would be more independent now etc etc......

When he got back to England he had to go into work the next day too for a week before he was allowed leave, they say it's to get them back into a 'normal routine' asap.

I wish your BF all the luck in the world when he gets out there, and you too, remember to stay strong for him. I would highly reccomend joining an 'army wag' website when he is gone too i have made some fantastic mates this way and they helped me through so much as they knew what i was going through as they were going through it too.

    Good Luck hun xx

  4. They get two weeks R&R at some point in their tour out there. They can choose to spend that time wherever they want, whether it's at home or in Cyprus. Personnel sent to the Falkland Islands get the same options too, except they get to choose the Ascension Islands as opposed to Cyprus. Only if they are on a six month tour on the Islands though.

  5. It is now mandatory for all soldiers finishing an Op tour to spend two weeks in Cyprus on "Decompression". This is so they can receive any phsycological help and to get things out of their systems in a controlled environment ect ect.

  6. they go to Cyprus for 2 weeks before to acclimatise to the heat, but not after

It would be a good idea for you to sign up to the forum on a website called Rear Party, which is for the family and friends of anyone in the British Forces.  You can ask your question there.  Many of the members have boyfriends/girlfriends and husbands/wives out on Operation Herrick (Afghanistan) and they will be able to tell you about the guys stopping off in Cyprus on their way home.  Do join - click on the word "register" on the top right hand side of the screen - they will be a great support for you.  Link follows:

  9. Unless it's changed in the past 5 months it's 36 hours as Neil T has put. It's decompression, wind down or whatever you want to call it.

Time before last my son flew straight back due to wounded being on the same flight.
