  1. There are probably those who injure themselves for the attention but most have trouble coping with their emotions and find relief in hurting themselves.

  2. I used to cut, and i hid it for years and years, then someone found out my mistake, i didn't want them to.

i didn't want anyone to know.

i didn't do it for attention.

But sadly there are some people who do it for attention and it's horrible.

It's a very bad way to get attention because it's so potentially harmful.

  3. It depends. You can usually tell by how outspoken they are about it and what they've done to kill themselves.

Like, jumping off the swing at a great height will likely not kill you. If you jump off the roof, however, which is much higher, that's more serious because that will more likely kill you.

If they're hiding it, and wear long sleeves or lots of bracelets most days, then there's likely another underlying issue. The last thing someone who cuts to relieve the pain needs is attention.

Trust me; I'm a former cutter and still do it sometimes.

  4. Yes.  But that, in and of itself, is a larger issue.

  5. To those who are not acquainted with the disorder, self-injury may appear to be an attempt at suicide. But this is not usually the case. “Generally speaking, these people are trying to end just their pain, not their lives,” writes Sabrina Solin Weill, executive editor of a magazine for teens. Hence, one reference work refers to self-injury as “a ‘life preserver’ rather than an exit strategy.” It also calls the practice “a mechanism to cope with stress.” What kind of stress?

It has been found that many self-injurers have suffered some type of trauma, such as childhood abuse or neglect. For others, family conflict or the alcoholism of a parent is the factor. For some, a mental disorder is involved.

There could be other problems as well. exceedingly guilty over her daily imperfections. “I figured that I had to ‘get tough’ on myself,”

This girl name Sara says. “To me, self-injury was merely self-discipline. My ‘self-discipline’ included pulling out my hair, cutting my wrists and arms, hitting myself and causing deep bruises, and sentencing myself to such punishments as keeping my hand under scalding water, sitting outside in the freezing cold without a coat, or going an entire day without eating.”

    for her , self-injury was a reflection of a deep self-loathing.

If you are a youth, do not presume that you can help a self-injurer on your own. Remember, there may be an underlying problem or disorder in need of treatment. Also, self-injury can be life-threatening—even when the injurer has no suicidal intent. It would be wise, then, to urge the cutter to bring the matter to the attention of a mature, caring adult.

  6. i can't speak for everyone, but i know people who cut themselves because that's the only way they can deal with emotional pain, or because they feel guilty and they don't tell anyone. they cut themselves because they feel like w.e. they are feeling it's killing them and it has to get out of their system, like its poisoning, suffocating, so they cut themselves to get rid of it... there is a lot more to it than people going for attention, the people i know are going to foster care because they are abused by their father, others because they get kicked out almost every month, and the list goes on...

they dont do it for the attention, they do it cuz they cant deal with w.e. they are going through, and when people know it just makes things worse

    they need help
