Question:

Do speaker wires matter in a new home theater system?

I just got a new Onkyo home theater system and I've yet to set it up. Before I do, should I go buy some special speaker wires? Do they really make a difference? I've always used Monster Cables for connecting components, so I'll probably stick with those for the rest.

  1. Here's an inexpensive solution which blows monster cable out of the water.  The advantage is SOLID CONDUCTOR cables as opposed to BRAIDED STRANDS.  If you do have braided stranded copper, each strand should have its very own insulation.  Click right here to get your own: http://www.avtruths.com/budgetcables.htm...

  2. For a high-end music system, the speaker wires do make a slight difference.

But HT sound is very different. It is highly compressed, sparse, your attention is on the Video and you dont play a favorite movie over and over and over again like you do favorite songs.

So the speaker wires dont make nearly the difference for a movie as it does for music.

Monster makes decent stuff, but there is a 50% markup for the retail and 50% markup to pay for all the marketing. So unless you get an employee discount, you are paying a premium.

My advice: get a spool of good oxygen free 12 ga from a speaker building site like PartsExpress and use it everywhere.

  3. speaker wires do make a difference. signal transfer is the key here. have you ever tried to water your lawn through a straw. same concept. the smaller the cable the lower the signal transfer. you dont need to spend a fortune on cables but good quality cables will make a noticeable difference that you will be able to pick up on

  4. Hi.Speaker cables can influence the sound you hear coming from your loudspeakers. Here are three things you should know.

[1]  The best Cable is no Cable.

[2]   The ideal Cable does not change the signal travelling through it in any way.

[3[     No Cable can improve the sound quality of a system, they only make it worse in varying degrees.

The only way to choose  speaker cable is to listen to as many cables as possible and pick the one that seems better than all the others.Or, take a chance and buy one on the recommendation of  Answerer's.

I use Van den Hul Speaker Cable ,because it matches my system.

  5. dont buy super thin speaker wire, but you dont have to go crazy and spend a ton of money, 12 gauge should do just fine.
