  1. You use the term mentally retarded which originally was referring just to people with cerebral palsy but is now used loosely for any form of mental health and as an insult. If you are referring to people in the looser form of the word well then yes there are many people with learning difficulties that get  married. People with Aspergers syndrome often live happily married lives. People with cerebral palsy have it much more difficult due to physical disabilities imposed on them.

I work with ASD people and legislation's states that if they chose to have a meaningful relationship with another person who also has special needs as long as both parties are able to give their consent then it is their human right to access that right the same as anyone else.

So in answer to your question .. yes they do but not all.

  2. Yes!  Not all "special ed" people are low functioning.

Some are dyslexic, some are missing limbs, some are blind...

  3. I know a couple that got married against the husbands parent's wishes. Both are mentally slow and equivalent to pre-teens. They have two teen children, both with low IQ's but they are more cognitive than the parents. Its sad to see the children raising their mentally challenged parents. I work with emotionally disturbed children whose parents are more disturbed than them. Some of the parents are married some aren't. Once a person is 18, if they have the ability to discern their free will, they can fight for whatever they feel is best for them. Sometimes it works, but I see the negative consequences of it daily and its hard to comprehend.

  4. do non special ed people get married?

the answer is the same to both questions

  5. How could you be so cruel?

Of course people with disabilities get married and I cant believe you could even say or think the things you have just said.

My son goes to a special school and im sure he may get married later on in life.

My cousin actually has dislexia and is happily married.

  6. Not all people with mental disabilities are able to get married. Depending on the severity of their disabilities, many of them need constant (or almost constant) supervision by a non-disabled adult. While there are instances of even people with Downs Syndrome (a rather severe form of mental retardation) getting married, usually some arrangement is worked out by the parents, who tend to house the married couple. In these situations, sometimes one or both spouses are de-fertilized to make it impossible for them to have children.

  7. I believe that there are complicated legal issues with that since I believe that they are not legally able to give consent to have s*x due to their mental issue. That, among other issues, leaves me to believe that they probably don't.

  8. Of course people with disabilities get married.  I am a special education teacher in an elementary school.  My students will lead normal lives once they graduate high school.  People that are in "special ed" have nothing wrong with their hearts, they are completely capable of loving someone and being loved in return.  They just have a disability that makes them have to work a little bit harder to achieve goals in school and later on in their jobs.  Anyone can fall in love and get married.  My students will probably even reproduce and start the whole "special education" process over again.

  9. There is a wide range of students that are enrolled in special education programs.  This could range from a minor learning disability to severe autism or mental retardation.  You do not qualify for special education for simply having a physical impairment (like missing a limb), but your school is required to make accomodations for your disability.  People with minor learning disabilities can overcome them and become fully functioning.  A person that suffers with something like mental retardation will often have a legal guardian past the age of 18, therefore they will legally not be allowed to marry.

  10. duh, didn't you see The Other Sister?

    Juliette Lewis

    Diane Keaton

    Giovanni Ribisi!

i really felt bad when i laughed at first, but it really is a cute movie haha

  11. Special Education is a rather large umbrella in which to categorize people.

    Autism, ADHD, Dyslexia....etc.

There are lowe, moderate, and higher functioning people that fall within the category as well.  People that need extra help with their homework fall under that umbrella as well.

So the answer to your question is "Yes".  They marry, and your probably know some of them.

  12. Anyone can get married and that includes people that may be handicapped. Many people with Autism. CP, and Down Syndrome get married.
