I'm going to get a canon speedlite! Do you get good catchlights using it?

  1. yes if you use it correctly.

  2. yes they can but as with any other light source position and angle make a difference. The position of a catch light is determined by the placement of the “key” ( main)and “fill” strobes, and changes as their height and angle away from the camera lens change. Most  studio portraitswill try to show a catchlight atthe 10 or 2 o’clock position, created by the ”key”light. to do this with the strobe you need to get it off the camera and use a cord or wireless setup to fire the flash. Nikon has the CLS built into many of its strobes and cameras and this will do it You can also use soft boxes on the strobe to change the shape of the catchlight. some flashes have modeling lights( on the SB800 its called a Modeling illuminator) to let you see where the catchlight will fall if not play with the stobe using the flash test button or take test shots and look at the output to see where it is

Making sure the eyes are in good focus will help make the catchlights stand out.( I remember one of my photography instructors, Mr Moore,  preaching for portraits to focus on the eyes)  I focus on the eye nearest the camera as 1/3 of the depth of field is in front of the focal point and 2/3 behind.

  3. When used correctly... there's a little white reflector inside the flash that you can slip out to help with that.

  4. asdssas
