  1. No. I think pumpkin might actually be a variety of squash. I dunno..LOL

There are many different kinds of squash each with a unique taste.

  2. No they have different flavors and textures.  A lot has to do with the way you prepair them. The spices you may use.  I enjoy squash of many kinds.  During the pumpkin season I enjoy making fresh pumpkin pies.  It is alot more work than getting the pie from a can but taste so much better.  Enjoy.

  3. Pumpkin is a type of squash just like yellow squash, zucchini, acorn etc.  All taste different.

  4. Pumpkin is a type of squash.  And no, they don't all taste the same.

  5. Pumpkins are generally the orange winter squash like the ones we make into jack o'lanterns.  Many times hubbard or cushaw squash is what is used in pumpkin pies.  There are many different flavors of winter squash.  I prefer the butternut flavor with acorn second.

  6. The other answers are right, but there are times you can substitute different types of winter squashes for each other or for pumpkin because the differences among them are subtle.   For starters, you can buy both pumpkin and "pie pumpkin" when they are in season in the U.S.  The pumpkin that you use to make a jack o'lantern is bred for size, not for flavor -- they are good for feeding livestock, but not so much for eating (although the seeds are good roasted).  I have used hubbard or acorn squash in place of pie pumpkin in pies and bread recipes.  Turban squash is also very similar to these three varieties.  The best way to find out is to cook each one and note its attributes.  Some are creamier in texture, some are stringier, some are more watery.  Another reason for differences among them is the growing conditions - they will be sweeter if the weather is sunnier, for instance.

  7. Let me try to answer this question in a different way. Pumpkin in India looks very much like the pumpkin in United States. But if you try to cook the American Pumpkin to make curry as is done in India, its not same. Now let us follow the Indian pumpkin recipes and use Butternut squash, the outcome is exactly same.

The butternut and Hubbard winter squash cook same as the Pumpkin in India, though the Pumpkin in India look like pumpkin in USA.

The Pumpkin in United States is more stringy, and less dense than the winter squashes. On the other hand you can cook and grind pumpkin or butternut and use the pulp to make pumpkin pie and the results would be very close.

Just to complete the issue of squashes, the summer squashes are totally different than either winter squash or Pumpkin. The summer squash are of zucchini family.

  8. Pumpkin is a type of squash, so I guess the answer is they taste the same. Sometimes people use butternut squash in place of pumpkin, when making pies, and it's hard to tell the difference.

BTW: Sweet potatoes, not even a member of the squash family, can be spiced up to taste like pumpkin.
