Do squirrels eat baby birds?

My daughter rescued a baby bird with a broken wing. when we came outside a squirrel was standing over the box l*****g his chops and the birdie was gone!

Yes, squirrels can be opportunistic feeders and often raid nests to eat eggs..so I would not doubt that they would eat a baby bird if presented with one.  It is also possible another predator ate the baby bird before the squirrel got there...a cat, another bird, raccoon, rodent, etc.
