Do staffing agencies really perform background checks?

I've been to a few staffing agencies and some tell you that they require a background check or they post a sign in their office saying that every candidate will go through a background check, which I know takes a few days to get the results, but yet at the same time, they are so eager to submit your resume right away to their client. Do they really perform these background checks or even check your references before they choose to represent you? Or is it more of a scare tactic to try to deter anyone with a questionable background from applying at their company?

Most do; yes.  Many companies require the agency to do those things, but it doesn't mean they won't represent you in the meantime.

Some clients DO require staffing agencies to perform a background check. Some will also tell the agencies, specifically what they want checked.

Remember, most agencies have a reputation to protect.and   if it is for a long term, assignment  rest assured they WILL do a check.

yes they do.  but in the meantime they will represent you.  if something comes up they'll discontinue representation.

No they don't. Two of my friends got great jobs with a tepm. agencies and they lied on their resume and they never checked. lol They went to different agencies too.

they do perform the background checks & verify references.  most companies now require these checks before they will hire you, in this way they protect themselves from future liability.
