It depends on which one you get.  The steam cleaner only cleans the top surface of the floors it doesn't get into the grout or the creases.

If you are talking about the larger machine you can rent sometimes from some supermarkets and well, I don't know where else, but yes! They do a great job on the carpets and even on upholstery too and a lot less expensive than hiring professional carpet cleaners.

I used to do both our carpets and my mother in-law's next door and thought it was fun and very easy.
