  1. No, they run off of electricity.

  2. In a funny kind of way, but only if the electrical energy is produced by oil or gas powered generating plants. Most are still coal fired while wind and solar are the least numbers.

  3. Nope, they're all electric, so they are quiet and the tunnels don't fill up with fumes.    Electricity is a great way to move public transportation that follows a particular route, because you can put the electric conductors where it will go.

You know every electric circuit needs 2 conductors right?  On trains, one of them is the track, and it's wired to be harmless if you touch it.  The other one is either an overhead wire, or a third rail.  That one is dangerous.

On electric buses, there are two overhead wires and two trolley poles on the bus.  Here's one

  4. Not directly - they run on electricity.  But the Electricity comes from a variety of sources, including Natural Gas.  In the U.S. in 2002 the breakdown was:

    Coal: 50%

    Nuclear  20%

    Natural Gas 18%

    Hydro (falling water)  7%

Other  (Geothermal,  Solar,  Wind,  Biomass) 5%

In recent years because of pollution concerns, more electricity has been produced with Natural Gas.
