  1. It would be nice if students had the right to choose their teachers, but only if teachers had that same right to choose their students too...LOL!!

I think it is always appropriate to request a teacher and hope it works out...but a teacher who is great for one student may not be great for another.  There are so many different factors that go into it.  I always felt whoever my kids ended up with would be learning experience, not only in the subject matter--but ability to adapt to work with people different from themselves.

  2. Ok. This is kind of a 2 prong question. No, you do not have the RIGHT to choose teachers, HOWEVER, I know we asked for certain teachers for our kids and pretty much we got them. It is at registration where you can ADDRESS these questions. I know if one of our kids had gotten a teacher we knew wasn't going to work, we'd start the process of changing. Bad part is alot of schools are going to the "team teaching" idea. Each student is in a group with certain teachers that they are assigned. To change one teacher means to change the group. Its pretty painful and I'm not a big fan of it. I haven't seen a benefit yet. supposedly, they will know your child better. I'm not so sure of that.

Now, if you have a teacher and you 2 just aren't seeing eye to eye and conflict seems to be the daily discourse, you need to address it with your parents AND your counselor. A sit down with your teacher also might be in order WITH your parents present. Once u start that ball rolling, be prepared for the consequences. Make sure its NOT your behavior and you are just trying to get out because your friends are in another class. You will learn hard lessons if you try and do that.

  3. By law, no.  You have the right to an education... but your state decides where and when you go to school.  Your local school administration decides who your teachers are going to be. Some schools allow parents to request certain teachers, but there is no guarantee you will get the teachers requested.  Most administrators try to balance class lists with teachers they believe will be most helpful to the class... it's difficult to do it on an individual basis because of the hundreds, perhaps thousands, of students to assign.

  4. only in college

  5. I think that they should do it through their parents. Someone I know wanted to request a teacher because he heard they gave more recesses. His mom wouldn't let him. In another case a person wanted to request a teacher because she wanted more of a challenge in school and had heard that one of the teachers was a harder teacher. In that case she was able to. I think they should be if there parents do it, that way the overachievers don't have all the same teacher and the average students don't have the same teacher. I think kids need a balance.
