Do subway (underground) stations stay open all night?

Question

Or do they shut off some stops, go slower, or what? What's it like in the London Underground at dead middle of the night, or in New York? Just curious.

In Boston, the MBTA is the company that provides are Trainsportation. Our Trains first trips in the AM Start at 5am last train anywhere leaveing from point A or B is usaly around 11:45 or 12:30

In Los Angeles, they shut them at just after midnight.  There's a big rolling door that comes down.  They have somebody sweep through the station to make sure there's nobody in there before they close the entrances and exits.

I used to work for the transit agency here, though, and I have once been in a station after almost everybody was gone.  It's kind of creepy.

I'm not completely sure but I know in Washington D.C. that they don't run near as often, if they don't completely shut down at night...

London Underground shuts down soon after midnight and re-opens somewhere around 5am (times vary on different lines). During that time, maintenance gangs swing into action, some of the advertisments get replaced, stations get cleaned, etc. It can be a big flurry of activity even though there are no - or very few (engineering) - trains, as they only have a few hours before the trains start running again.

New York, on the other hand, does run at least some lines at night. They have an advantage as in Manhattan several lines are four tracks wide, allowing maintenance on one pair whilst trains run on the other pair. The frequency is reduced though.

In New York City, ALL subway stations are supposed to be open all night.  However, with overnight construction, some lines get re-routed.  In the case of a subway station being closed during construction work, the MTA usually provides a shuttle bus.
