Do supermarkets cheat with their chickens?

I have noticed that some supermarkets when they sell whole chickens leave a big piece of fat inside. Do they do this in order to make a profit from the extra weight or because people use that bit of fat for some purposes (e.g. gravy)?

  1. yes they get them really cheap because they have been brought up in terrible conditions and force fed to fatten them if you are going to buy them please buy organic these at least have ahappy life before they die and you know they have been fed on things that wont harm you

  2. Yep they sure do. You are better of eating lots of fresh fruit nd veggies but i do love my chicken :(

  3. People use it for flavoring, tenderizing and such.

  4. Yes, fat and extra water or ice is used to pump up the profit. Cannot see anyone cooking with chicken fat, its vile.

  5. Cheap supermarket chickens are c**p! They are fed on c**p, treated like c**p & taste c**p. Do like chunksy23 sez, buy organic or free range birds. they have a much better life & taste better for it.

  6. To add to the above, supermarkets often sell chickens at a loss - the point being to get you into the supermarket where you will buy other things, so they come out with a gain (same reason the bread and milk are always at the other side of the store to the entrance - so you have to walk past everything on your way).

And battery-chickens are horrificly awful - free range or nothing.
