Do surge protectors work when plugged in but not turned on?

i have a monster power home theater center that is plugged in and not turned on when i leave my house. does it protect still or do i need to have the power on for the protection? Thanks!

  1. The passive redirect at the input will work even with the power off. Active aspects won't.

    More importantly, everything in your home theater system is designed to have 5 volts running through it at all times, to keep the little computers inside running. It's not a good idea to reboot all of your equipment every day, or several times each day. This is a common cause of component failure.

    Also, your cable/satellite box depends on power to download updates such as guide information, and can't do this with the electrical source turned off.

    The Monster box is designed to protect your equipment while allowing standby power to flow. In fact, if anything does blow up due to a power spike, Monster will pay to replace it under their warranty/insurance that comes with their equipment.
