Do surround speakers have to be positioned behind the listening area?

Question

There is no room behind, and the detailed instructions for the system don't mention this, only mention what to do if any speakers are nearer than others.

Is it best to use only front speakers in this case?

Surround speakers are provided to help you get a better reproduction of sound from the device they are connected to.

Stereo sound, which is often what this is, though not exclusively, is better than the monaural.

Positioning the speakers in the configuration advised by the manufacturer is best but, you can experiment with the positions and see just how well the sound is heard, when you are sitting in your favourite armchair!

Don't expect perfection unless you can place the speakers as suggested.

If you don't have the speakers behind you then you're not getting the full surround sound experience. You can just use the front speakers if you want to and if you've got absolutely nowhere to put the rear speakers then i think that's gonna b your only option.

will the other speaker not be able to go on the wall i have surround sound and to get the affect they need to be place correct

No. Install the surrounds.  If your surrounds are dipoles, you can point them directly at your listening position.  If your surrounds are highly directional, e.g., standard speakers, you should point them angled at around 30 degrees toward the back wall and slight down toward your listening position.  If your speakers are bipoles, e.g. planer speakers, mount them on the sides but make sure the null zone for it's sound dispersion pattern is not aimed directly at your listening position.

In the end, surround speakers of ANY kind, mounted directly to the sides of your listening position, will give you a great theater listening experience - far better than using just the front three.  Such surround positioning will not be as good as it could, but then only a very small percentage of people have rooms that are ideal for surround listening.

Bottom line is install them, use them, enjoy your theater and don't worry about whether they're perfectly placed or not.

The clue is in the term SURROUND, however place them as far apart and as far opposite to the main speakers and the sound will be fine.

The ideal is to have the speakers "surround" the seating area, but It's not possible for me either.  I suggest you set them up where you can and see how you like it.  Just make sure you have the lefts on the lefts and rights on the right and have the bass hooked up for sure because that's where you get all the real rumbling sounds.  Enjoy your set up the best you can and don't go techno crazy.  Have fun.

If you have a very old Pro Logic I system, they have to be behind you. If you are using anything newer, Dolby Digital 5.1, DTS 5.1, etc. you don't want speakers behind you unless you have 7 speakers. You can put the extra two behind you.

Most movies are recorded with the itu set up in mind:

This will work well with the speakers at your sides.

The second setup allows for speakers to be placed directly to your sides also and it sounds fine.

they can be mounted on a wall behind ou or infront of you youll still hear it just get a way to have 2 behind you thats why its fcalled Surround Not infront

they should but i have the same problem so i have placed them at either side of the chairs at equal distance away it sounds great try it

it doesnt matter where u set them. maybe since there is no room behind u maybe you can try hangin them on the walls beside your main seat well i hope i helped bye

no you can deffinatly put spearkers on the side of you.  It is still a cool effect i used to do this in theaters when i was a sound technician.
