Do swamp coolers not work when it rains?

I havnt had one of these swamp coolers in my house since i was really young and i recently just moved into a house that has one. It was working alright as far as swamp coolers go but It's been raining pretty bad the past 3 days and It like, little to no cold air is coming out.

I ~thought~ I remembered something about swamp coolers and rain but I dunno if that was true about the rain making them not work right or If that was something my brother was just trying to fool me with as usual ><

Any help before I make the poor old maintenance guy I'm forced to use(I'm renting) come all the way out here to fix it in this weather would be great! Thanks :P

 1. As the whole principal of cooling is based on evaporation, and the swamp cooler is an imperative cooler with the medium being water, the higher the humidity the less effective it will become.when the air can't take any more water no cooling takes place. That is why they work so well in drier climes.

 2. They don't work very well in humid conditions - they work by taking hot, dry air and adding moisture to it. So, if your outside air already has a lot of moisture in it, it won't work as well.

 3. Swamp coolers are also called evaporative coolers. If the water can not evaporate because the air is already saturated with moisture there is no cooling. But the fan will still circulate air. This is why in the humid southern states everyone is going to air conditioners. If you plan to stay awhile you may want to consider a window air conditioner. Most landlords will permit it some might even do it themselves.
