I'm considering getting a digital camera for someone I know for their birthday, but I want to know something. Do taxes apply when you buy a Best Buy Service Plan? Thanks, your answers are always appreciated!

  1. It depends on the state law if they are taxable.  Here in PA, they are.  In Maryland, they aren't.

I think the Service Plan is a great extra to your gift.  They offer ones with and without accidental handling.  The ADH will cover if you drop your camera or get sand or water in it.  Then, if something happens, you can take it to any Best Buy store to be sent out for service.  In a couple of weeks your camera will come back like new.  If it can't be fixed, you get the credit toward the purchase of a new camera.

  2. why don't you ask the one that is offering the service plan. They should know.

  3. DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT GETTING IT! The (most ANY) extended warranty service plan is a waist of money. Listen to Clark Howard (talk radio) or go to his site and get the full story. The ONLY exception is for the rair cases where the OEM manufacturer offers such a plan (on a car, for example) and I don't mean the dealer. As a fifteen year vet of RCA Service Co. ( both as a tech and a mgr.) who sold them, I now discourage people from getting them.
