I was looking into buying a PS3 but the only ones they sell in store these days is the 40 GB system. I heard you can't play PS2 games on the 40GB, is that true?

  1. i think so

  2. Nope, sorry. Only the 60 and 80gb's have backwards compatibility. The 60gb has total bc, while the 80gb has partial bc....this is because the 80gb uses an emulator not the actual emotion engine.

  3. well you can get emulaters for it so i think so...

  6. Yes it is true. The 40GB PS3 is totally unable to play PS2 games.

People telling you otherwise, that an Emulator is coming are wrong.

    To make it clear:

The old 60GB Model had the PS2's Emotion Engine Chip built in.

The 80GB Model had the Chip replaced with an emulator program to play PS2 games.

So there ALREADY is an Emulator, but it WON'T work on the 40GB Model.

    Why? Only Sony knows...

  7. They just asked this question.  But no, you can NOT play PS2 or PS1 games on the 40GB.  Only on the 20GB, 60GB, and 80GB.

  8. Unfortunately No. You cant play PS2 games but you can play PS1 games.

  9. yes it's true
