My boyfriend and I have a very close friend who is Indian and he flew to Shanghai on a business trip and also to tour around. He was there for a little more than a week. He came back very bitter and was even crying from what he went through there. He said the locals actually SPAT on him, more than one occassion, just randomly! He said they were being VERY rude towards him for no apparent reason. He said he felt so humiliated while he was there. This is genuine and I'm NOT trying to stir anything up. I am just concerned, because now he has something against all Chinese. I tried to tell him maybe it's just that many locals in China aren't fond of Indians, and that here in Australia the Chinese are different . He seems to be traumatized by the experience and now have anger towards all Chinese. But seriously, what was up with the whole spitting thing?! Are they that rude to Indians in China?! I just want to know if there might be underlying reasons. And have u experienced this??

  1. I'm one chinese live in Wuhan,Hubei province,China.

believe me,It's not against Indian but all people who is not the local of Shanghai.

In our school Huazhong University of Science and Technology there are many Indian students abroad. We respect each other.I even have two Indian friends though we can't communicate conveniently because they can speak only a little English and Chinese. Some time I even don't know What they are saying, just loling.

  2. That's utterly disgusting behaviour your friend described. I don't really know what to say! I'm of Chinese descent, though I've never been to China myself, and I can't help but feel somewhat embarrassed on behalf of those revolting racist pigs. I've heard several stories of overt racism by mainland Chinese before..... what's going on?

  3. chinese ppl are lil different .

but in a city like shanghai i dont expect that behaviour.

its may be political reasons.. may be culture difference or something .

but its really weired to hear that in a city like shanghai ppl stil behave like this.

  4. Unfortunately it's a cultural thing. Some Chinese people spit randomly in the street. (Westerners used to do the same thing, but stopped some generations ago due to health education etc.)

What constitutes rudeness varies from culture to culture. A person visiting New York, particularly from a recognizable minority, might think New Yorkers had a thing against their ethnicity. But if they spent some time in New York that would just find out that a lot of New Yorkers are just rude (not all of them by any means).
