Maybe, maybe not.. I do think that they thought that the Russians would not intervene in their actions in S. Ossetia and Abkhazi for fear of such a threat. Unfortunately for the Georgians, their protectors have demonstrated equally poor judgement in places like Iraq so the Russians don't feel that either country has right on it's side.

We had promised them membership in NATO, just hadn't said when.

Now that is a *****, isn't it, saying "we will protect....someday, just not yet".

I suspect a few other nations are going to be knocking on the door of NATO now.

Yes. The Americans have been supplying the Georgians with weapons systems and training for years.

In a way we have been here before when the Hungarians rose against their Stalinist oppressors. The VoA encouraged Hungarian freedom fighters to hold on as the Americans were coming.

In the Georgian case I think the Georgian and American politicians, as well as their military, underestimated the strength of the Russian response.

Again, I think, we have seen a failure of American intelligence in relation to Russian military capabilities. There are too many Cold War warriors fighting yesterday's battles and not enough realists with a grasp of C21st realities.

If so, then they were rather foolish. I suspect that we will see a reassembly of the Soviet Union and a return of communism there.

if US didnt give georgia all the weapons, if US didnt send its military instructors to georgia, if US didn't support anti-russian propaganda in georgia, georgian president (employed by US gvt, btw..he even gets salary from the US government) wouldnt think so.

Yeah. They are delusional. I do not blame them, though. The United States does tend to act like the police of the world.

They did believe it before firing their first shot. Now they have learned Uncle Sam is merely a "Paper Tiger", described by  Communist China's Mao Tse-Tung 60 years ago.

Obviously they did. The way I see this, the US pretty much tricked Georgia into carrying out this entire debacle, just so they could gauge Russia's military might. I hope they were impressed.
