  1. Yea im just glad we dont g*y names like Magpies and Swans. Not reall good is it

  2. just take high side's answer pretty much sums it up for the nrl. in local leagues they have some aussie names.

  3. Yes they do... all of them have the name of a City or part of Australia, and all are names of great teams in the history of australian sport. All the names come from the history of the area or the club / fans themself.. so they are just as Australian as any other team names out there.

People miss the fact that a team name is about identity, you need something you can market... calling your team the Kangaroos is something we've saved for our national team as it is a national animal... and while some teams might not have typical australian animals as mascots.. they have a distinct australian identity about them.

  4. I reckon any new teams should be named after Aussie snakes.

Eg - the West Sydney Death Adders.

  5. We had some like the Magpies and the Seagulls and the Rams but they are gone.

We still have eels and storms in Australia.

  6. god dude as if you would call a team the brisbane swans or the brisbane magpies that sounds ******** lame, more reasons why afl are retarded

  7. Storm is probably as Aussie as it gets... and the Kangaroos for the aust side...

  8. does most of the american football teams have a n american names?

  9. Oh you silly little Magpie, why not spend your time thinking about something that actually matters.

  10. LOL. I don't actually think they do. We have a test team named the 'Kangaroos', I think that's about all: -

Broncos - possibly the closest in relation to Brumbies or something.

Bulldogs - we have them in Australia

    Raiders - hmmm...

Cowboys - seen at rodeos sometimes.

Sea Eagles - plenty of sea around Aus.

Storm - pretty much a universal thing.

Knights - came from England, which was pretty much Australia (colonisation 200+ years ago.)

    Eels - Australia zoo?

    Panthers - see Eels.

Sharks - also quite close. I think the Grey Nurse Shark is pretty much an Australian animal.

Rabbitohs - I don't think anywhere has 'rabbitohs', as such.

Dragons - see rabbitohs, although this is explained through St George.

Roosters - oh yeah, plenty of them in Aus.

Warriors - still apply? NZ native warriors, maybe.

    Titans - see Raiders...v. similar.

Tigers - nickname came from the jersey scheme and stuck (excuses, excuses...)

but, I'd like to point out that Australian names aren't really all that menacing and buff (which is half the point). Kangaroos is ruled out, as mentioned above, which leaves...koalas, wombats, possums, echidnas, platypi, kookaburras, wattle, banksia...see my point? actually, I'm quite surprised at how the Waratahs (RU) actually pulled 'Waratahs' off. Though that does show it's possible.

  11. are the nrl bringing in new teams in perth and adelaide like the afl are "doing" in gold coast and west sydney?
