  1. they do play all tupes of dvd but they certainly don't upgrade the picture quality.

  2. dude, HD DVD n blu ray are 2 different thing from two different companies. they have some sort of law that forbids any company to create a device that can play both. best bid is to try to find some chinese product cause they never follow any laws anyway or you can wait till you pc can accommodate both HD n blueray

  3. Unless they say they play "HD DVD" or "Blu-Ray", no.

An "upscaling" DVD player with component outputs or HDMI output only plays regular DVDs but outputs an HD signal (which is a signal that displays 720i or higher resolution, i think).

A normal DVD player will only display 480p resolution.

Since the DVD has much more detail than can be shown in 480p resolution, the higher resolution output (720i, 720p, 1080i, ...) does actually improve the picture quality a little.

  4. These days most DVD players have component video, so you can't judge compatibility by just looking at the connectors.

Standard DVD players will play regular DVDs.

BluRay players will play BluRay discs and regular DVDs.

HD-DVD players will only play HD-DVD and regular DVDs.

There are combo drives that will play all three formats, but go for about $999.

The BluRay and HD-DVD drives will upscale the standard DVDs and make standard DVDs look better.
