Or are they essentially Lowland Scots?

What about the Irish Guards - do they have a pipe band?

  1. The Scots Guards are a Highland Regiment based at Auchinbreck in Argyllshire.  There is a Lowland Regiment - the Coldstream Guards.  Both have pipes as do the Irish Guards.

    Bagpipes are not just Scottish.

My favourite pipe music is from Galicia in NW Spain where the pipes are called las gaitas. The link gives examples

  2. Good Question !! One would imagine they'd require some form of support for their bags and pipes but unfortunately they're forbidden ( traditionally ) to wear any form of underwear beneath their kilts.
