  1. There are a few others (Air France and KLM for example) , but those are the major ones. Does it influence my choices, of course, but 1) that is a function of air services between the places I need to go to and 2) the availability of flights on an airline to the destination I must go to. If you fly a great deal, it is best to have  memberships in a couple of them. I use Star and Sky Team mostly because the airlines going to places I have to go are members of one or the other.

  2. All other things being equal or close to equal (such as: price, nonstop vs connecting, etc) yes, I'd be more likely to buy a seat on an airline that will get me to my next free ticket the fastest.

  3. Since Delta operates the most flights out of where I live, I tend to fly Delta a lot.  However I also am a United Airlines frequent flyer member.  What I like about the Star Alliance is that there are over 20 members.  Many of the airlines are really good such as Singapore Airlines, Asiana, All Nippon Airways.

But price and convenience also play a factor in deciding which airline/alliance I choose to go with on my particular flight.
