Do the beaches of Cancun, Mexico have big waves or calm water? I have never been there.?

My answer is the same with some explanation.

The hotel zone is shaped like a 7.

The top of the 7- faces Isla Mujeres which makes the water into a bay (bahia) so no waves but what does happen is that more sea weed can grow because the water is more still.

The long part of the 7- faces the open sea. Depending upon storms at sea, the time of year, the phase of the moon or just Mother Nature having fun that water can and most of the time does have waves.

The water is always warm! And the sand is always white and cool (no matter how hot the temp.)

We stayed at the Riu Cancun, near the top of the hotel zone, and the water was very calm.  No big waves at all.

i stayed at the oasis cancun and there was big waves there, pretty strong actually, but theyre quite fun to play with :)

Cancun's hotel zone is shaped like the number 7. The top of the 7 is calm water, the long part mostly has surf. Some have big waves,where you get knocked around alot.

I personally like the calm water.
