  1. Yes.

    Some are classed as deep level lines... like the Northern Line.


  2. The older lines (Circle, District, East London, Hammersmith & City and Metroploitian) are a few metres below street level. They were constructed by digging a trench, laying the tracks and roofing over. The more Modern lines (Central, Northern, Piccadilly, Bakerloo, Victoria, Jubilee and Waterloo & City) were built using a tunneling shield (an early TBM) to avoid the distruption of digging up streets to lay the trench. There was a layer of clay soil under the city which was perfect for this construction method, but it was a some way below the surface, hence these lines are deeper (though the depth varies from about 30ft to over 200ft!)

  3. Yes, some are classed as sub surface lines, and were built using the cut and cover method. The others are deep level lines and were made using a cutting shield. these lines have lifts or escalators to connect the platforms with the ticket office and the trains are lower due to small tunnels.
