Question:

Do the fans put too much emphasis on preseason games?

It's just preseason, where the starters get the whole second-half off, usually. It's not a game that will show the awesomeness, or the futility, of a team, in it's entirety. I''ve seen teams that had 0-4 preseasons that went on to the playoffs. I've seen teams that went 4-0 in preseason, and went on to NOT make the playoffs. Some of the players act very happy when making a good play in these games. Even the announcers get a little too jazzed up. Preseason is just evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of a team, and you wouldn't expect that same outcome in a preaseason game as you would in a regular season game. I just think it needs to be taken a little less seriously. Anyone agree/disagree?

  1. I second that it is for the rookies draftees and coaches to see who is good enough to make the team and who will be cut. And it ticks me off to no end when the fans start trash talking about how their team whipped butt. Just like our next game against the Vikings Wade said he may not play the starters at all our back ups and special teams still need a lot of work. But you will have some idiot on here talking about how they kicked the Cowboys Butt lol. I hate Preseason games so many players get hurt some pretty bad like HW of Texas in last nights game but I know its necessary. But don't play your starters some get hurt and can't play once the season starts, and that hurts the team we have a lot hurt already..

  2. Here's the point i always make:

In 2006, the Raiders were 5-0 in the preseason...

Then they finished 2-14 in the regular season.

  3. Yeah, fans and professionals on ESPN try to analyze how good a team will be based on watching one's third-string unit play another third-string unit. You really can't tell. There are millions of examples of teams doing great in preseason and terrible in regular season, and vice versa.

Honestly, i think it's just cause all us NFL fans are starving to watch competition and analyze play and to debate others on who is better. So we argue over stuff that is so trivial.

  4. no i think that "you play the game to win" one of the n.f.l. coaches said. applies to preseason games too. the fans don't want to see their team lose any kind of game.

  5. I agree. I'm not going to trumpet the Cowboys as Super Bowl champs just because their starters looked good last night. These games don't count.

On the other hand, it is still football; and it's always fun to see your team win and it still sucks to see them lose. Some people get too wrapped up in the preseason outcomes; though.

I think the preseason needs to be reduced to two games, but that's another story altogether.....

  6. I've always felt that pre-season games are just for the purpose of "trial and error" on your roster. To see who really fits in and who doesn't. You play a few games here and there to see what adjustments you want to make before the regular season begins. That's my opinion, as to why pre-season games are played.

So to answer your question, pre-season games do reflect your long-term wants for the year i.e. to win the Cup, but the win-loss record shouldn't be a distraction to the performance of your regular season.

    Hope that helps
