Not sure what category this question should be in, but here goes:

We were thinking of using 2 way radios (motorola talkabouts) for a cross-country road trip with 2 vehicles. I know that most states have hands free laws that cover cell phones, but what about walkie-talkies? I know the whole point of the laws is to minimize driving distractions, but there will be times during the trip where communication between the two drivers will be necessary. Anyone know if the walkie talkies are legal to use while driving?

  1. .    Walkie Talkies are ok.

  2. In California, 2-way radios are allowed only if necessary for work and provided by the employer (for example, taxi drivers, ambulances, etc.)

Just get a bluetooth.  That will be legal in every state.

  3. Great question. I will be watching for the answer. The anti- cell phone laws are a real nanny-government gone wild problem. It took me a while to get used to the cell phone while doing other tasks, but the younger people can use the phones as almost part of their hands. Not any safety issue as far as I can see. We should demand the repeal of such laws. most people can use the cell phone as easy as turning down a radio.
