  1. I was wondering the exact same thing!!!! So I started to ask around, and from what I got is that they don't know if they do get money from winning.  But look at Michael Phelps, he has won 8 gold medals, his face is going to be everywhere! Which they are probably going to have to pay him for being on their advertisement! Oh and Speedo gave him 1,000,000 dollars if he could get his 8th.  So I guess in a way he probably did get a lot of money.

  2. I think they can receive endorsement deals that don't have anything to do with Olympic events.  Not all gold medal winners will get deals, though.  It all depends on how popular they are in their country or even better, worldwide.  I can see how a Chinese badminton gold medal winner would receive more endorsements than say, a Norse coxswain or something.  And you can bet that this Phelps guy will be set for life with endorsements, even if he quits competing worldwide after this year's events.

  3. Mmm. not sure but im sure they get lots of $$ for advertisement...just imagine...they wear all those sports brands to advertise and afterwards they still do advertising for sports companies...

  4. The USOC has paid prize money to its winning Olympians since 1984, this year giving out $25,000 to gold medal winners, $15,000 to those who take home a silver and $10,000 for a bronze. Some of the richer U.S. sport federations give additional prize money to their winners as well.

Most other countries do not award their athletes, although some do and some don't.  There are also punishments, one of the most famous being when Uday Hussein had losing members of the Iraqi soccer team tortured for their loss.

  5. i think they do but i not so sure

  6. Varies by the country - I believe I heard them mention on Today last week that the US medalists got $20K per medal (probably for a gold, less for silver/bronze). Not sure exactly where those funds were coming from tho. Also heard the leader of some African nation was supposedly offering to purchase a mansion for anyone earning gold for his country.
