Do the new 450 ATVs with coated aluminum cylinders need honed?

i thaught you would want to but was told that sometime it would ruin the cylinder. i thaught it was a 2 stroke thing that people would not use a hone. just want some input on the subject.

  1. If the nikasil is compromised at all (ring groove, scoring, pitting), then the cylinder will need to be replated or sleeved.

    If you're just installing new piston and/or rings as a maintenance thing, then a hone isn't necessary.  If a professional shop does the job, they may run a very fine grit hone for a couple of passes just to give the cylinder a bit of 'tooth' so the new rings will seat more easily.

    I wouldn't recommend anyone with a handheld hone to do it though - you'll have more of a chance of damaging the cylinder than making anything better.
