  1. Nope, the only reason why you re asking this question is because the IIMs are among the best B-schools in India. And only the best brains in India manage to get in, so IIM graduates are undoubtedly the best in the country. If they increased the no. of seats or IIMs, it would mean average people could get in too, and they would soon be producing only average graduates, and lose their status and soon be only an average B-school that you wouldn't need to ask this question anymore.

Consider IGNOU. Just about anybody can join for their MBA course, provided they fulfill the minimum eligibility criteria. But  that doesn't mean their MBA program is valued. Its is only because the IIMs produce the best managerial talent in the country that their programs are so much sought after and their students get astronomical salary offers. If the number of students were increased, all this would disappear and nobody would want to join the IIMs anymore, let alone ask about raising the number of seats. They would be just like the Government-run universities of today.

I hail from Kerala, and over here we have an Indian Institute of Management too - IIM Kozhikode. But that doesn't mean IIM-K is as good as IIM Ahmedabad or IIM Bangalore or make it at par with any of the top level IIMs. In fact, there are already several private B-schools that are far better than IIM-K. Or IIM-Indore for that matter.

By means of an analogy, one out of every three people in the world own a Toyota Corolla. But not everyone can own a Rolls-Royce. If Rolls-Royce cars were produced for the mass market and prices brought down so that just about everybody could get their hands on a Rolls-Royce, it would be where the Toyota Corolla is now-easily available and affordable that nobody would want it so much anymore.

  2. if they do not compromise on the QUALITY then it is not a bad idea to increase the number of IIM

    all the best

  3. You know something? You have grown brand oriented. You have a desire to have more numbers of IIMs in India. Why don't you desire to have more institutes like IIM who can do as better as IIM or even more. Development should never be brand oriented. It should be multidimensional and in all directions, and gathering the support of each every particle of the country.
