Do the original ('70's) VW Beetles come in auto transmission?

I've only seen them in manual....What's the go?

  1. sure they came in auto transmission, it was sluggish and didn't have any pep and you had to shift them to get some pep.  But it was truly an automatic transmission.

    but my question to you is why would you want an auto beetle it would take from the driving experience  

  3. kinda they had what was called a autostick The transmission was a three speed manual transmission connected to a vacuum-operated automatic clutch. When the driver put their hand on the gearshift the clutch would disengage, allowing shifting between gears, once they removed their hand the clutch would re-engage automatically. The transmission was also equipped with a torque converter, allowing the car to idle in gear, like an automatic. also parts are kinda hard to find for them and they seem to have lots of problems
