  1. Only your orthodontist can tell you for sure if you need one.  They're used if you have excessive crowding in your mouth.  They don't really hurt.  The expansion is very gradual.  Each time it's made bigger (every few days), it's a little bit tight the first time that you put it in, but soon it feels normal.

  2. Palate expanders are not fun.

It doesn't hurt that much, but like half of the time you feel this odd pressure on the roof of your mouth... oh, and food gets stuck in it.. yuck.

But hey, now my teeth look a h**l of a lot nicer!

  3. there is a line that runs the length of the midline of your maxilla (roof of your mouth).  This line contains palatal sutures that have not yet fully fused.   What the expander does it kinda pulls these sutures apart to widen your bite.  I havnt heard about it hurting but it can get somewaht soar.  I believe that the expander can expand the palate at .5mm a day.  You may not think this is very significant but after a month it is a pretty big improvement.  Dont worry about the expander it shouldnt hurt anymore than getting your braces wire tightened
