Do the slots at Atlantic City still accept quarters?

Yes and no. Most of the slots no longer take coins.  You can still find a few in some of the casinos, but for the most part, you put in a $5.00 to $100.00 bill.  The machines in AC do not take $1.00 bill.  When you cash out, you will get a voucher or a ticket to cash in at the Voucher Redeeming Kiosks or at a Cashier.

I haven't been their in a while either .my friend told me that a lot of casino's are fading them out.

Yes but you can't win in quarters...you only get tickets now to cash out
