  1. I think they still use film reels.  I still notice slight skipping and dust particles from the film.

  2. Both.

Most cinemas (including IMAX) still use film, but some use digital projectors (See 1st link re digital cinema).

    4K x 2K (2X the resolution of 1080p HDTVs) projectors are available (see 2nd and 3rd links)

Sound has long been on optical disk for DTS cinema sound (See last link), which is sync'd to the video via smpte timecodes.

4K Digital Cinema uses files too large for optical disk playback. The programming is stored on a "Digital cinema server" and handles DCP files that include Jpeg 200 video files. Needless to say you won't be seeing this in many homes very soon.

  3. depends on the theatre... some advertise a movie as "digital"

most of the movies ive seen exhibited the characteristics of projector... jumping projection, dust, etc

  4. The Imax theater I went to recently used a film type reel to reel thing...

  5. Most, if not all, still use "cans" of film, runing from reel to reel.

Even the ones using the term, "digital" in their signage, are refering to digital sound, which is a digital track, ON the film, running right next to the film's frames.

Some, few movies are "filmed" in a digital format, but, even these are transfered to a film medium for distibution and display.

  6. The theatres i normally go to (Edwards and Ultra Star) use some sort of digital thing, and it is probably DVD or stored on a harddrive or a server system
