Do thermal window cutains (panels) really help to save money on heating?

I'd like to get some for my big picture window for this winter for the obvious reason of saving money on heating costs...

I have a baby on the way also and we spend a lot of time in our living room where the window is located.

Absolutely, they work and save money.  If they're too expensive for you, look into getting a solar screen instead.  Those do the same thing but they're cheaper and you can still see through them.  They mount just like regular window screens.
