This [cooling] trend will reduce agricultural productivity for the rest of the century -- Peter Gwynne, Newsweek 1976

There are ominous signs that the earth's weather patterns have begun to change dramatically and that these changes may portend a drastic decline in food production - with serious political implications for just about every nation on earth. The drop in food production could begin quite soon... The evidence in support of these predictions has now begun to accumulate so massively that meteorologist are hard-pressed to keep up with it. -- Newsweek, April 28, (1975)

This cooling has already killed hundreds of thousands of people. If it continues and no strong action is taken, it will cause world famine, world chaos and world war, and this could all come about before the year 2000. -- Lowell Ponte "The Cooling", 1976

If present trends continue, the world will be about four degrees colder for the global mean temperature in 1990, but eleven degrees colder by the year 2000...This is about twice what it would take to put us in an ice age. -- Kenneth E.F. Watt on air pollution and global cooling, Earth Day (1970)

  1. People dont listen to actual scientist they only listen to the media. A majority of meteorologist and climatologist actually dont believe in global warming. It is only celebrities that drive it, and more people believe in the celebrities than they do actual educated people. Watch these videos.

  2. I was delivering newspapers in Milwaukee when most of those came out.  When I was trudging through deep snow freezing my keester off I believed them then (I read what I delivered).  I learned not believe them now and more importantly I research and make my own determinations based on the available information.  Global warming is a religion and gore is the messiah.

  3. Dumdum, I believe you are aware this has been discussed here before.  Those claims did not have the scientific evidence behind them that global warming today does.  It was only a media scare, and I know you want to believe AGW is also only a media scare.  Go on and believe that if you want, but like I said, this time there is much more science behind it.

  4. Yes, some of those quotes sound familiar.  They are dishonestly used by AGW deniers to suggest "scientists got it wrong in the '70s so they are wrong now".

There is no comparison between the two.  The 'ice age' stories from the 1970s was driven by the media in order to sell papers more than anything else.  There was no widespread scientific support for the theory.

Today there is massive scientific consensus with regards anthropogenic climate change.  Every national science academy of every industrialized country on the planet confirms it.

Only a handful of scientists question the reality of AGW and they are almost entirely congregated in the USA and very often funded by energy corporations, such as Exxon Mobil who have spent over $20 million in the past decade to fund propaganda to protect their profits.

  5. why did you add the other info and no one answered

  6. For as long as there's been a world there have been people claiming the end of it is near and it is spiraling out of control.  The global climate is exceedingly complex.  The climate has always been cyclical and there have always been warm and glacial periods.  The set of recorded human data on the subject is quite limited compared to the age of the Earth.  I find it all very confusing and contradictory but what I do know is the Earth and climate are not that fragile and nature has a way of balancing out what is thrown out of alignment.  The Earth has survived disasters far in excess of anything we can produce short of global nuclear war.

  7. You could probably find quotes from individuals in the 15th century talking about the sun revolving around the earth.  So what. Does that mean you can never believe anything any scientists says, no matter how strong the consensus?

Newsweek, the last time I checked, wasn't a science journal.  And Lowell Ponte most assuredly didn't speak for the climate science community of the world.

Here's a snapshot of what actual climate scientists were saying in the scientific literature of the 70's.

Are We on the Brink of Pronounced Global Warming (1975)

    http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/ab...

"the exponential rise in the atmospheric carbon dioxide content will tend to become a significant factor and by early in the next century will have driven the mean planetary temperature beyond the limits experienced during the last 1000 years"

    Global Cooling? (1976)

    http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/ab...

"both hemispheres will be subject to warming due to the atmospheric (greenhouse) effect as the CO2 content of the atmosphere builds up from the combustion of fossil fuels"

On the Carbon Dioxide–Climate Confusion (1975)

    http://ams.allenpress.com/perlserv/?requ...

"Based on current understanding of climate theory ... estimate for the global surface temperature increase from a doubling of atmospheric C02 content is between 1.5 and 3 K"

That's why one can only understand the truthful seriousness of global warming by reading the scientific literature. Reading quotes from Newsweek or books from fringe extremists will only confuse you on what scientists really know and understand.

  8. Couldn't they just have said all our consumption has screwed up the entire planet and if we survive at all there will be h**l to repay?

  9. They sound very familiar.  Here are some more:

In Africa, drought continues for the sixth consecutive year, adding terribly to the toll of famine victims. During 1972 record rains in parts of the U.S., Pakistan and Japan caused some of the worst flooding in centuries. In Canada's wheat belt, a particularly chilly and rainy spring has delayed planting and may well bring a disappointingly small harvest. Rainy Britain, on the other hand, has suffered from uncharacteristic dry spells the past few springs. A series of unusually cold winters has gripped the American Far West, while New England and northern Europe have recently experienced the mildest winters within anyone's recollection.

As they review the bizarre and unpredictable weather pattern of the past several years, a growing number of scientists are beginning to suspect that many seemingly contradictory meteorological fluctuations are actually part of a global climatic upheaval. However widely the weather varies from place to place and time to time, when meteorologists take an average of temperatures around the globe they find that the atmosphere has been growing gradually cooler for the past three decades. The trend shows no indication of reversing. Climatological Cassandras are becoming increasingly apprehensive, for the weather aberrations they are studying may be the harbinger of another ice age.

    Time:  Jun. 24, 1974

If they can only make up their minds.  Does warming or cooling cause droughts.

  10. OMFG something must be done the earth is changing temperatures as it has for billions of years!!!

MAN MUST CONTROL CLIMATE or we are all DOOMED just ask Al Gore he used CGI in his movie!!!
