  3. The meaning is the same, but the first version is a better construction.

  4. I like your first choice better.  In the other one,"....saving from....." employs a participle and a preposition -- and doesn't have much impact.  Also, it's a bit of a stretch, grammatically speaking.  Stick to the first one.
