yes they do, the check in process includes the passport and sign and sail and they look at your Credit Card and license I do believe. It's pretty painless though, just be sure ou ahve your info and you'll be great! Than go enjoy and prepare for the muster drill.

I have been on many cruises when they take the passports and keep them so customs officials can see them before passengers leave the ship to visit their country. On occasion, passengers retrieve their passports during the cruise because they need them on shore and turn them in again when returning to the ship. Occasionally, individuals may be called in to see the customs officials if they have any questions. I have had to stand in line on the ship with my passport before we have been allowed to leave the ship.

I just got back from a 7 day cruise and I can say --- YES they do check passports before the cruise, but you will also need one comming home as you will have to go through customs to enter the USA

Depends on which country you are cruising to and when you are cruising.

Passports are not required for cruises until 2008 for Mexico and the Caribbean.  However, cruises to other countires  such as Greece require a passport now.

If you cruise in 2007 to Mexico and the Caribbean, all you need is 1) state issued picture ID (driver's license) 2) original or certified copy of your birth certificate.

You will present these documents to embark to the cruise line and to U.S. Customs when you debark and re-enter the United States.

If you are cruising in 2008 and have not yet applied for your passport, you should do so now.  It only took 5 weeks to get our daughters passports but I have heard that other people are waiting months to get their passports.

Yes, they take your tickets for the cruise and check your id / passport or drivers license / certified birth certificate and ask for a credit card.  They issue you a sail sign credit card.  it's a card for your cabin / and you use it for anything you want to buy on the ship.  you never have to carry any pocket change while on the ship.  

This is all done when you board .  It's called the embarkation process.  After you get your cards , you go through security / get your bags checked just like the airport and then get on the ship.  

Your next job is to find your cabin / drop off your carry on bag and find out where the lunch is at and what the drink of the  day is. lol.  Have  a great trip.
