im flying from chicago to washington in a couple of weeks and i was wondering how thouroughly, if at all, they check the luggage that is transported in the bottom of the plane? like if they just x-ray it or rummage through it a bit? if someone knows could you explain to me all the things they do with it? I've just always wondered and i figure if im putting it in their care, i should be informed about what all it goes through exactly. thanks for your help guys!

also. i was wondering, is it possible to just check in a small bag of things they wont allow you to bring on the plane (like all the liquid stuff they won't let you take on these days) instead of a huge check in bag and just have all your other stuff in two carry on bags?

sorry the question is so long ^-^ thanks once again.

  1. they can ask you to open it up...they have like...luggage control security people and its possible they ask u (if your plane gets chosen for throurough check-ups)

  2. When you check your bags in they dont go through them.  I think they do go through an x-ray but im not sure. The bags that you carry on with you go through an x-ray machine and they can go through them if they want..they do it by random.  you can only carry on one personal item (like a purse) and one carry one.  The carry on has to be under a certain size.  If i were you i would put all of your things in your checked luggage and just carry on your purse and any id's and money and that kinda think that you can't lose.

  3. they do exactly what you said...they lightly rummage thru, and run thru xray... they pay more attention to contents of carry on stuff. and yes, you can check in smaller bag, with larger quantities of lotions, etc... they also toss that stuff around VERY ROUGHLY.. so be sure its packed solid inside to cushion the blows of abuse. o'hare isn't the friendliest of airports..those checkers seem to truly hate their jobs.. sky caps out on sidewalk outside expect a dollar per bag that they help you with as a tip. i'm originally from chgo, now on west coast..so i fly often to see my kids.

    happy travels

oh yeah, you cannot take bottle of water or pop, or cans either.

  4. They run the luggage thru the xray machines.  You should be able to check stuff you can't carry on.   More info.:

  5. if you got funky looking stuff in the x-ray, they'll open your luggage and rummage through it. in 8 trips through O'Hare, i've had my luggage gone through once.

liquids are a pain in the butt, i wore contacts up till a few months ago. contact lens soulutions come in the minimum of 4 ounces, airports allow 3 ounce maximums, i got eye surgeries and no longer need these fluids, and if these fluids were lost in a bag, i was sunk! my "checked" was lost in a trip from spain coming back, atlanta to chicago. but i was "home" and just had to wait for my clothes. going to spain, i would have been totally screwed, no clothes  and no contact lens solutions.
