Are you talking about when you get a ferry out of/into dover? They don't check everyones bags but they do random searches.

Yes, they check all your bags, they and you must pass thru' a metal detector and x-ray machine.  Security is now very tight here in UK.

UK Customs and the Fuzz search bags, x-ray bags, they also have sniffer dogs who can smell drugs and explosives five miles away.

Not like at airports.

However, there are far more random checks these days. And I go to France about 5 times a year and get stopped and searched(including the car) on average 1 time in 10. Also just stopped and questioned about 1 time in 5.

My bags were put throguh a machine but I think if they find something in the bag it will be hand searched along with the rest of your luggage.
