  1. It is quite possible they do it as part of a medical screening. This would determine if you need medical attention, or to ensure you are not under the influence before they place you with other inmates.

You would be placed in a cell by yourself until your system is clear.

  2. I got out of prison 2 weeks ago. I was in there for 3 months and the only drug test I had was in reception. I was on SMU (substance misuse unit) for the full 3 months and never once had a test. They cost money to do so it is very rare the prison carry them out unless you are under suspicion of having had drugs ie through a visit or something. If you did test positive on MDT you would be called for adjudication with the SO (senior officer) and they would decide the punishment. Most of the time the punishment is going onto basic regime which is just loss of priveleges ie, removal of tv, less or no association and less money to spend for 28 days. It is very rare you will be put down the block.

Hope this helps in some way

  3. I was in prison.  yes they do randon drug tests all the time.  If you h ave a positive test, you are issued a major misconduct ticket for "Substance abuse".  Your security level goes up and you spend 15 days in segregation.  You stay in a higher security level for a long time.  You more than likely will be denied parole after this.

  4. If its in UK, they can give you a Mandatory Drugs Test, MDT.

This can be a Random, where the computer picks your name from a list, totally random.

Suspicion, they have enough reason to suspect you may have taken something.

Frequent, you have had positive MDTs and you are tested frequently

Reception, on your initial reception into a prison

Only an outside adjudicator can give you added days, and this is for the misuse of Class A drug

Other positive tests for anything less than Class A the Governor can deal with.

  5. Of course they do.  You may only be referred to mandatory drug treatment in prison, and it may affect how soon you get out.  (As you may know, calculating how much of your sentence will be served while incarcerated is something of a dark art).

Your drug use can also lead to your being stripped of certain perks in prison or to being subjected to enhanced searches of your...um..person.  If anything is found, you may be prosecutued for possession of those substances and of contraband.
