  1. My understanding is that they do drug test ALL babies born in hospitals today! They do a merconium test of the babies first bowel movement and they use this for the drug testing. You can look it up my googling your question for your state.

  2. why? are you going to have an addicted baby??

  3. Babies are not drug tested on a regular basis.  If there is suspicion that you have used drugs, they will test you.  If they still feel the baby is at risk, they will then test the baby too.

Many drug addicted mothers believe they can outsmart the nurses and doctors and hide their addiction.  The fact is though that they are trained to look out for clues of an addicted mom.

  4. No state (to my knowledge) routinely tests all newborns for drugs. They only screen those whose mothers admit use, have a history of use, or if there are unusual circumstances which would make the staff suspect drug use (rapid labor, baby with low birth weight or a baby that cannot stabilize and maintain blood sugar or temperature, etc.)
