First you should get your names straight.  An ocean kayak is a long thin sleek kayak used for traveling long distances like the eskimos do.  What you are asking about is surf kayaking.  That is a sport where they take a much shorter, but also more maneuverable, white water kayak and use it in the surf.  You could use an ocean kayak in the surf and get a great long ride straight in to the beach, but with a white water kayak you can have all kinds of fun riding the curl and face of the wave due to it's maneuverability.  At any rate I'm including a link to the surf kayak association.  They hold world championships and the link should take you to that information.
