Do they have any proof that the hole in the ozone layer is not a natural phenomena?

To the best of my knowledge, the holes were there when they were discovered. This means that the depleation theory is not a valid theory at this point. Right?

  1. Engineer is right.  Plus...

Since the Montreal Protocol (an international treaty) starting phasing out the use of CFCs, the ozone layer has stopped disappearing, and started to recover.  Exactly as the scientists who said it was caused by us predicted.

Those scientists are pretty shrewd.  They've got it right on global warming too.  It's mostly caused by us:

  2. Nice try, Bob, but the level of CFCs in the atmosphere has not declined and yet the ozone hole as receded.  CFC production has only been reduced.  It is still produced in Mexico and China.  Also, due to sort of a flywheel effect, the CFC's that were produced in the USA and Europe throughout the decades are still leaking into the atmosphere.

Your A follows B, therefore A caused B logic doesn't work in this case

We've only begun to observe the ozone hole.  It has at various times grown and shrunk in the 30 years we've been able to measure it.

  3. According to the site below the first ozone measurements were taken in the 1960's before the hole developed. A British team discovered the hole in the 1970's and it was first documented in 1984 and first reported in the scientific literature in 1985. Suspicions that NO2 and Halocarbons could result in ozone depletion preceded the discovery of the hole. There is plenty of proof that the hole is not natural. The science is very well understood.
