Do they make a paint that I can put on my baseboard heaters?

I want to repaint my baseboard heaters because they are all nicked and scratched and was wondering if they made paint for that? My heaters have a glossy type finish.

  1. Covers don't get hot enought to cause a fire.  Prime with a primer for metal, then spray with any latex gloss.

  2. The baseboard heaters don't get all that hot, so any spray paint for metal surfaces should work.  If not try epoxy-based appliance paint or heat resistant paint, all readily available in spray cans.

  3. You use to be able to buy "stovepipe enamel" which is specifically made for hot surfaces. I used black but I presume a good paint store would stock a range of colours.

  4. As mentioned above, any oil-based fire-resistant paint for metal will work. You will have to prepare the surface, though: glossy finish won't hold paint very well, so you'll have to sand it down or use a chemical called Wilbond to remove the gloss. You can then use an oil primer (fire-resistant, preferably), then one or two coats of topcoat.

Another thing you have to do is heat up the heater after the paint is completely dry but before it's too cold to leave your windows open. The first few times you use the painted heater it will emit a stink. Make sure you have no children or people with lung problems in the house, and let the heating system work with the windows wide open. Depending on the paint formulation it may take one, two, or more heatings before the smell completely dissipates.

I don't recommend this if you have pet birds; the fumes can be life-threatening for them.

  5. as the baseboard heaters are metal you will want to use an oil based paint. any oil based paint will work but i would get one made for metal surfaces.
