Question:

Do they make an uninterrupted power supply (UPS) that's powered by rechargeable NIMH batteries?

It would be great to have something that's powered by eight or twelve NIMH AA batteries to power my computer equipment in case there's a blackout... or even use it as a portable power supply for anything with a plug.

You'd need a LOT of AA batteries to continue powering your computer.  But for temporary power, Wal-Mart carries something called Portable Power, which is a heavy-duty NiMh 12v battery pack, complete with recharger, along with an inverter so that you can power 110v devices.  I think it was rated for 400 watts, which isn't terribly much for heavier devices, but great for smaller ones on camping trips.  Price, if I recall, was something like $89.
