Our apartment provides free wireless internet but the apartments don't have LAN lines in each apartment. I'm wondering if there is something made that can pick up that wireless single and create an actual LAN line for us to connect to ?

  1. Tell your apartment to watch this video: http://www.cnet.com/4520-7390_1-6274537-...

  2. If you had a laptop picking up the wireless connection you could hook it up to other computers.

  3. Yes indeed there are.... they are called "Bridges". Dlink even has a multiport bridge the DAP1522.  http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=663

Here is an article on how one guy used it..

It will receive the apartments signal, convert it to ethernet for up to 4 machines.. you can even add a switch to get more connections!  This particular unit can also be an access point (many bridges can be used either way - it just a reversal of signal!)

You can also just get a single port bridge and connect it to a switch for multiple computers. If you want to get fancy and have a little network experience you can even get a bridge, feed it to the WAN port of a router, and have a private lan!

    Hope that helps.
