Question:

Do they make mirror extensions for motorcycles?

I'm new to this game here so maybe I just don't know what I'm talking about. I jsut bought this 86 Honda 450 and it has the factory mirrors on it. They're rectangular - 5" something by 2" something on 6" posts.

I was riding today and noticed I can't really see much to the sides and rear without leaning out of the way and no matter how I adjust them. They don't vibrate or anything, I just can't see much. And also, obviously, I can't see what's directly behind me.

Is there some type of mirror extension, or wider mirror I can buy that'll help me see better? You know - like what a truck or car would have when towing a trailer.

  1. It's just the way it is. the mirrors are made that way for aerodynamics. Everybody has to look past their arms or over their shoulders. I don't even have mirrors on my primary bike. I just do shoulder checks. Even when I ride a bike with mirrors I rarely use them. I rely on actual sight by doing shoulder checks.

  2. I have never seen mirror extensions for sale.

I am a bit confused by your question to be honest.

Since you are not going to be reversing then you never need to see what is directly behind you. I have the mirrors positioned so I can see if there is a car about to overtake me or if there is one close behind me.

I have a Honda CB400 with the factory mirrors and they are perfectly fine.

Of course they have the normal blind spots which all bike mirrors have which is why I always do a life-saver when I am turning or changing lane.

  3. nearly all bike mirrors are like this. get used to it. why would you want to make your bike wider and less manoeuvrable in tight traffic anyways ?

  4. Yes there are mirror extensions made, any dealer should be able to order them for you.

  5. If you have to lean out of the way, you do have an adjustment problem. You may need to move the posts as well as the mirror. If that doesn' t do it, you will need to buy different mirrors. It's one way that folks go about customizing their rides. Take a look through the some sites like Drag Specialties, J & P Cycles, or Dennis Kirk.
