Do they need to pay council tax if one is a full time student?

I’m here to ask a question for my friends

A couple bought a property and registered it in their own names several months ago. One just lost job and is staying at home now. The other is a full time student. They have no idea regarding council tax at all as they rented a property and they were both student before.

Do they need to pay council tax? if it is, how much they should pay?

Many thanks

  1. as they are not both student they will not be exempt from council tax but if one of them has just lost there job you can get deducted council tax or not have to pay until you have found employment the amount you have to pay depends on what band your council tax area is in all the information about that can be easily found on a google search engine , i have been looking for myself as will be a full time student by September

    hope this helps your friend

  2. If one is a student and the other is unemployed, the unemployed one should claim JSA, they should also claim Housing and council tax benefit, yes they will be liable to pay council tax but council tax benefit should cover the whole liability charge

  3. The student is exempt from Council tax. If the two of them are living together then the student is exempt leaving only 1 liable person, if this person works they get a 25% discount for having only 1 eligiable person living there

If neither of them are in work, one a student and 1 unemployed then the Unemployed person should register for JSA and also Council tax Benefit and he will reveive a full discount on his liability

the charge of council tax depends on you local council and the band you live in

    No they will not pay.

    1student + 1 unemployed claim Council tax Benefit 100%

1 student + 1 working claim council tax benefit for single person dicount of 25%

  4. yes you will have to pay coucil tax .i cannot tell you how much every house goes by a tax band of what the house is worth the coucil should tell you that

  5. The student will be disregarded for Council Tax purposes providing they qualify as a FT student for Council Tax purposes.

The remaining occupier will be liable for any Council Tax due with a 25% discount .

Council Tax Benefit may be payable to the non-student but they need to apply ASAP.
